FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What hole patterns can be drilled or tapped?

Single holes, linear arrays, matrix grids or custom coordinates, as through, blind or counterbored holes. Holes can be drilled, drilled and reamed, or drilled and tapped with metric (M2-M10) or UNC/UNF threads.

How accurate are hole positions?

Hole position tolerance is captured as an engineering requirement and confirmed at review; positional tolerances in the +/- 0.02 to 0.05 mm range are routine for CNC drilling.

What Is CNC Boring?

CNC Boring is a subtractive process in which the workpiece rotates in a spindle while a stationary tool removes material, generating cylindrical geometry — outer diameters, bores, faces, tapers, grooves and threads — with excellent concentricity and roundness.

Our shop runs CNC Boring daily, which means proven parameters and short setup times. Boring enlarges and finishes existing holes to precise diameter, roundness and surface finish. Upload your geometry — or draw it in the free builder on this page — and we will come back with pricing and DFM notes.

How CNC Boring Works at VT machining

The metal bar or billet rotates in the spindle while single-point tools shape outer diameters, bores, faces, grooves and threads. Constant surface speed control keeps cutting conditions stable from large to small diameters.

We start from your supplied geometry and tolerance scheme. The setup is designed to minimise re-clamping, which protects positional accuracy across features. A first article is verified against the drawing before the balance of the batch is released.

CNC Boring Tolerances & Surface Finish

Turned metal holds diameter tolerances to about ±0.005 mm with concentricity within 0.01 mm and good roundness. Turned finishes of Ra 0.4–0.8 µm are achievable with finishing passes and sharp tooling.

The tightest tolerances are reserved for the features your drawing flags as critical. Share your tolerance scheme and we will confirm what is realistic before quoting.

CNC Boring by Metal — Choose Your Material

Each material page covers how CNC Boring behaves in that alloy, what tolerances are realistic and where the parts are used.

Design Tips for CNC Boring

We are happy to suggest design tweaks that improve manufacturability. Consistent diameters, standard thread forms and avoiding extremely long, slender features help metal turned parts stay concentric and economical. If you send your model early, we will return practical DFM feedback before you commit to production.

Secondary Operations & Finishing

Finished metal parts can move straight into secondary operations under one roof. Typical add-ons are deburring, passivation, anodising, plating, blasting, polishing and laser marking. We coordinate the whole chain so you receive complete, inspection-ready parts.

CNC Boring Quality & Inspection

We control quality throughout the process, not just at the end. In-process checks plus final inspection — including CMM where specified — keep every metal part to print. Inspection reports, material certificates and first-article documentation can be supplied on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

What surface finish is achievable on with CNC Boring?

Surface finish on the part is controlled to your specification; we confirm the achievable Ra against your callout.

How clean are the edges produced by CNC Boring on ?

Machined the metal edges are clean and to specification; edge-break or deburring is added when your drawing calls for it.

Which industries use CNC Boring parts?

CNC Boring parts are used across aerospace, medical, automotive, electronics, semiconductor and general industrial sectors — anywhere precise components are required.

What tolerances can you hold for CNC Boring?

Achievable tolerances for CNC Boring depend on the alloy, geometry and feature size. Turning holds diameter tolerances to around ±0.005 mm with concentricity within 0.01 mm. Exact figures are confirmed against your drawing callouts.

Can VT machining make custom parts to my drawing?

Yes. CNC Boring is made to order from your CAD/2D drawing. Share your geometry, material grade, tolerance and quantity and we will confirm feasibility, lead time and pricing.

What material thickness or size range suits CNC Boring?

Turned the material parts are produced from bar or chuck stock across a wide diameter range.
