CNC Surface Grinding

CNC Surface Grinding is a core in-house capability at VT machining, supported by full inspection and a single engineering contact from quote to delivery.

Surface grinding produces flat, parallel faces with fine finish using a horizontal abrasive wheel. We quote from your files, give honest DFM feedback up front, and back each batch with dimensional inspection.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Which grinding processes are available?

Surface, cylindrical, centerless and thread grinding plus honing. The builder captures surface finish Ra, flatness and parallelism so the right process is selected at engineering review.

What finish and flatness can grinding achieve?

Surface finishes from Ra 0.8 down to mirror (below Ra 0.05), with flatness and parallelism to 0.002 mm on stable parts — single-digit micron capability on ground faces.

What Is CNC Surface Grinding?

CNC Surface Grinding is an abrasive finishing process. A bonded wheel removes a very fine layer of material, which is how single-micron size control, tight flatness or roundness, and mirror-class surface finishes are achieved — including on hardened parts that cannot be cut with conventional tooling.

At VT machining the process runs under full CNC control on calibrated equipment. In practice, that means this: Surface grinding produces flat, parallel faces with fine finish using a horizontal abrasive wheel. If you do not have a CAD file yet, the free 3D + 2D builder on this page will produce a drawing we can quote from.

How CNC Surface Grinding Works at VT machining

An abrasive wheel removes a fine, controlled layer from the metal part. Wheel specification, dressing interval, infeed and coolant are matched to the alloy's hardness so the surface is not burned or left with residual stress.

Programming is driven directly by your 3D model or print. Work-holding, tool selection and the cutting strategy are planned around the critical features and the material before the first chip is cut. First-off inspection confirms the process is centred before production continues.

CNC Surface Grinding Tolerances & Surface Finish

Ground metal reaches single-micron tolerances on size, flatness and parallelism, with surface finishes down to Ra 0.1–0.4 µm — and a near-mirror finish on suitable alloys.

Exact achievable figures depend on the alloy, the feature size and the part geometry. Tell us which dimensions are critical and we will advise feasibility up front.

Design Tips for CNC Surface Grinding

A few design choices make a real difference to cost and quality. Allowing adequate grind stock, specifying realistic flatness over the true datum, and relieving corners help us hit tight tolerances on metal efficiently. If you send your model early, we will return practical DFM feedback before you commit to production.

Secondary Operations & Finishing

We complete metal components with the secondary steps your drawing calls for. We arrange heat treatment, surface treatment, marking and assembly as needed. Tell us the final spec and we will plan the full route so parts arrive ready to use.

CNC Surface Grinding Quality & Inspection

Consistent quality comes from disciplined process control. Critical dimensions on metal parts are checked in-process and verified at final inspection using calibrated instruments and, where required, CMM measurement. Full documentation — dimensional reports, mill certs, FAIR — is available when your programme needs it.
