FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhen should I choose wire EDM over milling or laser cutting?
Wire EDM cuts hardened and conductive metals with no cutting force, holding tight tolerance on fine internal profiles, sharp corners and thick sections that lasers and cutters struggle with. Sinker EDM and EDM drilling are also available.
What accuracy can wire EDM hold?
Typical wire EDM tolerance is +/- 0.005 mm with excellent edge quality and no burrs, in tool steel, carbide, titanium and other conductive metals.
CNC Wire EDM removes metal through controlled electrical discharges between an electrode (or wire) and the workpiece across a dielectric gap. There is no mechanical cutting force, so hardened tool steel, carbide and superalloys can be cut to sharp internal corners and very tight tolerances.
VT machining runs CNC Wire EDM in-house, so scheduling, quality and revisions stay under one roof. Wire EDM cuts conductive metal with a charged wire, achieving fine detail and tight tolerance with no cutting force — and the parameters are set from your material and geometry, not a default recipe. Send a CAD model or a 2D print and we will confirm feasibility, tolerances and lead time before you commit.
How CNC Wire EDM Works at VT machining
Material is removed from the metal workpiece by controlled electrical discharges across a dielectric gap, with no mechanical contact. Flushing, on/off pulse timing and electrode/wire feed are set to balance speed against surface finish.
Every job begins from your CAD model or 2D drawing. Fixturing and tool paths are planned so the most critical dimensions are produced in the most rigid, repeatable setup. Critical dimensions are checked on the first part and monitored through the run.

CNC Wire EDM Tolerances & Surface Finish
EDM holds tolerances to roughly ±0.002–0.005 mm with no cutting force on the metal part, producing fine, controlled surface textures and sharp internal corners impossible to mill.
Final tolerances are governed by the material's behaviour, wall thickness and overall stiffness. We give honest DFM feedback if a callout would be costly or better achieved another way.

CNC Wire EDM by Metal — Choose Your Material
Choose a metal below for grade-level detail, achievable tolerances and typical parts in that material.
Small design adjustments often cut cost and lead time. EDM suits sharp internal corners, thin ribs and hardened metal that cannot be milled; allowing a small corner radius where possible speeds the cut. If you send your model early, we will return practical DFM feedback before you commit to production.
Secondary Operations & Finishing
Most metal parts need some finishing, which we manage in-house or through vetted partners. Options include deburring and edge-breaking, heat treatment, surface grinding, polishing, and plating or anodising for corrosion resistance and appearance. Give us the finished-part requirement and we will sequence every operation correctly.
CNC Wire EDM Quality & Inspection
Quality is built in, not inspected on. We monitor key features during the run and confirm them at final inspection, with CMM verification available for tight tolerances. We provide the inspection and traceability records your quality system requires.

CNC Wire EDM refers to wire EDM cuts conductive metal with a charged wire, achieving fine detail and tight tolerance with no cutting force. VT machining produces each part to your CAD drawing, selecting parameters from your tolerance, finish and quantity requirements.
What surface finish is achievable on with CNC Wire EDM?
Surface finish on the part is controlled to your specification; we confirm the achievable Ra against your callout.
Can VT machining make custom parts to my drawing?
Yes. CNC Wire EDM is made to order from your CAD/2D drawing. Share your geometry, material grade, tolerance and quantity and we will confirm feasibility, lead time and pricing.
Does CNC Wire EDM require dedicated tooling?
Wire EDM needs no shaped tooling; sinker EDM uses a shaped electrode we produce in-house for your cavity.
Can you EDM-machine hardened ?
Yes. EDM removes material by electrical discharge rather than cutting force, so hardened and difficult can be machined to fine detail and tight tolerance without distortion.
Which industries use CNC Wire EDM parts?
CNC Wire EDM parts are used across aerospace, medical, automotive, electronics, semiconductor and general industrial sectors — anywhere precise components are required.
